Noella Berg (Nelms)

Noella “Noel” Delanie Nelms, 69, of Scottsdale, Ariz., passed away on Oct. 8, 2012, at her home after a long battle with cancer.

She was born on Dec. 15, 1942, in Thief River Falls. Minn., to Nelmer and Delores Berg. Noella grew up in Hibbing the oldest of 11 siblings. She was a terrific big sister who set an example for kindness, perseverance and personal achievement. After graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1963 she taught school at a Catholic elementary school in Minneapolis for five years. Noella married the love of her life, George E. Nelms, on April 23, 1966, and they lived in Edina, Minn., until May 1999 when they moved to Scottsdale. Noella was a dedicated volunteer who gave many hours to a variety of organizations. She was an avid reader, was avid in the book club, was a competitive bridge player, a member of the Hyland Hills Ski Patrol for 25 years and loved gardening. Noella was a beloved wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, loyal friend and a wonderful homemaker who will be greatly missed by all who have been blessed by knowing her.

Noella is survived by her mother, Delores; her husband, George at 8300 East Dixileta, #303, Scottsdale, AZ 85266; son, Christopher and granddaughter, Chloe, of Minneapolis; and son, Michael (Stephanie) and grandchildren, Sydney and Evan of Burlington, Vt.; brothers: Erland, Eugene, Alvin, Clayton, Larry and Morris Berg; sisters: Julie Dembiczak, Cindy Swift and Barbara Smith; many cousins and extended family across the United States and Canada.

She was preceded in death by her father, Nelmer, and brother, Donald.

Funeral: A memorial will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at St. Christopher Episcopal Church, 2300 N. Hamlin Ave., Roseville, MN 55113.
